http://www.sunnah.org/history/prophets/Khidr.htm

all prophets are physically alive in their graves but there are narrations that mention 4 prophets that have not yet passed away in this world. two in the skies: 'isa and idris and on earth there are khidr and ilyas 'alaihimu's salam.

And Allah knows best.

Imam Ibn Hajar wrote a booklet substantiating that Al-Khidr (as) was a prophet, but I think most of the classical scholars of Ahlus Sunnah consider him a Wali.
I know that Allama Al-Ninowy (dba) considers him a Prophet. When I asked him. he mentioned a few statements by scholars in that, and then said that some (non-Sunni radical sufi' and Shia) have always used the example of Al-Khidr to prove the some Awliya know more and have higher Maqam (according to them) than even some Prophets! Nauthu billah.
I think this is the basis on which the shia consider their 12 imams higher than all prophets.

the book is az-zahru'n naDir fi nabayi'l khaDir
blossoming flower: concerning the reports about al-KhaDir (khizr, khizar, khiDr)

--
as the brother has already pointed, this book by imam ibn Hajar al-asqalani is about the opinions of scholars concerning al-khaDir. there are three main questions on which there is a huge difference of opinion:

- who was he?
- was he a prophet or a saint or an angel?
- and is he alive?

the author leans towards the position that he was a prophet [as mentioned in his other book al-iSabah] but also includes other opinions like:

30. abu'l Qasim al-qushayri said in his risalah: 'he was not a prophet; rather, he was a saint'

31. al-mawardi reports a third opinion: he was an angel in the appearance of a human.

32. abu'l khaTTab ibn al-DiHyah says: we do not know whether he was an angel, or a prophet or a pious man!

----
another book that is mentioned in this subject - and indeed mentioned by ibn Hajar himself - is ibn al-jawzi's `ijalatu'l muntazir fi sharHi Hali'l khaDir* in which he [ibn al-jawzi] rejects the opinion that he is alive.

Allah ta'ala knows best.

Bismillah

There is ikhtilaf whether Sayyiduna al-Khidr (alayhi assalam) is a Nabi or a Wali. It seems that he (alayhi assalam) is a Nabi.

some scholars say,he was a prophet.he passed.he appears sometimes.he'alaıyssalam gave lesson to some walis.for example mahmud'i enjerfagnavi was trained by him.
He visited ahl al bayt after our beloved Prophet sallallahü alaiyhi wasallam passed away.

According to this Madani Phool, remembering his name is a cause for one to die on Iman in sha Allah.

His name is Abul Abbbas Balya bin Malkan

QUESTION: Is Sayyiduna Khidar a Nabi?
ANSWER: The consensus of the Ummah is that he is a Nabi and this is correct. He is a Nabi and still physically alive. Almighty Allah I has commissioned to him the duties of the oceans and Nabi Ilyaas is in-charge of the earths. (Duties refer to services and supervision). Four Prophets of Allah I are still physically alive. Of course, all Prophets are alive. The Hadith Shareef very clearly states,
أن الله حرّم علي الأرض أن تأكل أجساد الأنبياء فنبي الله حىّ يرزق *
Indeed Allah I has made it Haraam on the earth to eat up the bodies of Prophets, for the Prophets of Allah are alive and Allah I feeds them.
All Prophets have to fulfil the command and promise of Allah I (death). They only experience death for a split moment and thereafter, their souls are returned to their bodies as it was. Their life after death is not different to their worldly life. They are alive in their graves, as they were alive on earth. Another Hadith Shareef states,
الأنبياء أحياء في قبورهم يصلّون *
The Prophets are alive in their graves and perform Salaah.

However, of the four, two are in the skies and two are on earth. Nabi Khidar and Nabi Ilyaas are on the earth, and Nabi Idrees and Nabi Esa are in the skies.
