Holding khatam for deceased on the 3rd and 40th

Asalamu'alykum

A lot of Sunnis hold khatams on various day after a person has passed up to the 40th day. What is the reason behind this as I can't seem to find any evidence for the virtue of these khatams. A few of my relatives were querying and I didn' t really have an answer as regards the significance of these khatams.

I came across a quote by the Syrian Shaykh Sa'id Ramadhan Al-Bouti saying these types of khatams are reprehensible Bid'ah.

I am sure somebody will be able to provide some evidence for these khatams as they are held by a lot of Sunnis, particularly from the sub-continent.
