I guess one can find an excuse for both Mufti Hassoun and Sheikh Buti. They may have a sword on their neck and also may have decided to spare their respective cities a brutal punishment (Aleppo and Damscus). It is a terrible situation. There is no guarantee for Assad that their position cannot change.

Btw, an interesting interview of Mufti Hassoun by a German publication from last november which I read again yesterday. Interview starts a little lower down.

Hassoun: I see myself as the grand mufti of all 23 million Syrians, not just Muslims, but also Christians and even atheists. I am a man of dialogue. Who knows, maybe an agnostic will convince me with better arguments one day, and I'll become a non-believer. And if I'm enthusiastic about the opposition's political platform, I also might change sides.

most interesting part of the interview.

If and when the revolution succeeds, I'm quite sure that both Sh Buti and Mufti Hassoun will have to leave the country.

Shaykh Hamza also sat with Bush before he destroyed Afghanistan, believes that the only Deen of Allah is not exclusive to Islam and defends Dante.

That would depend. At the moment Damascus and Aleppo haven't risen up other than the some suburbs and outer areas. Whether this is due to Mufti Hassoun (Aleppo) and Sheikh Buti (Damascus) standing by the regime or due to the cities being saturated with Mukhabarat (Intelligence agents) and regime thugs (Shabeeha) I don't know.

If Assad is overthrown without the 2 major cities joining the revolution the 2 scholars should be ok as they would be shielded by their followers.

If the 2 cities do rise up then the scholars may have to change their position or else they would risk being abandoned by their followers thus losing their support base. In this scenario they could flee.

Anyway here are some recent images of Assad meeting a scholars delegation. [11th April]
