Default Critical eyes

No one should blame us for critically observing & commenting on these people and their lectures, articles, books, etc.

After all, they endorse it! (linky)

classic hamza. doyen of spin-doctors in the islamic west.

Quote:
Mutannabi, the 10th Century Arab poet, whose name is derived from the word for “news” and can mean “the forecaster,” wrote in a poem,
sure, he said "can mean" but the title actually meant that he was an impostor.

naba' is news. nabiy is one who informs of tawhid of Allah; one who brings the news of the unseen, like things after death, paradise, hell, judgement day and so forth. mutanabbiy is a false claimant of prophethood from tanabba'a.

abu't Tayyib ahmed ibn al-Husayn al-ju`ufi al-kindi [303-354 AH] claimed prophethood, was arrested and punished, and who repented from his apostacy in prison and returned to islam. he was known as mutanabbiy or 'false prophet' because of his claim; it is also said that the title mutanabbiy was because of his mastery of the language, eloquence and knowledge.

Allah ta'ala knows best.

---
this is like saying: Hamzah is from Hamz, the root of which means: 'to attack', which can also mean 'an attacker.' by extension, one who attacks sunni-islam.*

*actually, Hamzah means lion; also Hamzah is a city in The West (maghrib - west africa). my 'extension' is just to illustrate how this trick works.

A person must always be ready and able to back up his quotes with sources and support his claims with sound arguments. If one is unable to do either, the quote must be withdrawn, and the claim should be abandoned. It is not acceptable to make public a quote or claim if one cannot authenticate it.
does this apply to hamza yusuf?

and is he willing to examine the article "who are disbelievers" and his "buddha green one" essay in the same spirit?

well, he did give you an open license to be

'extremely vigilant about one’s sources' and

'learn to question and examine what we hear or read, and not pass along anything unless we know the sources to be sound' and

'everything we hear, see, and read, even from our own tradition, with the exception of the actual text of the Qur’an and rigorously authenticated hadith, must be looked at with a critical eye' (underlining mine)

on a serious note, call me a mad conspiracy theorist, but i believe that underlined part is a wahabi-istic subliminal message to his blind followers to even question the words of mujtahid mutalq imams, mufassireen and muhadditheen*.

just as the wahabis are all for a free-handed 'Quran and authentic hadith' approach with any nafsanic interpretation, commentary or explanation to apply anything meant for any people/specific person/circumstances to people/specific person/circumstances it is not aimed at, he is no different in this methodology of free-handed analysis.

of course with the wahabis, they twist rules of fiqh to issue bizarre rulings and apply verses of Quran meant for disbelievers on Muslim. with this shaytan, he wishes to declare budhhists as 'a saved sect like the sabians', all based on free-handed analyses!

the jahil mutlaq doesn't know that the Quran itself says

----

* ironically, as rightly pointed out above, for his fan clubs and others like them, the critical eye mantra doesn't apply to him and his cohorts, but it does apply to magnificent scholars of the ummah. mr. abdul qadir jilani of the UK can brazenly attack imam Bukhari or Al-Ghazali, but Allah forbid should anyone ever speak in the same tone about him. nuh "not intrinsically impossible to lie" keller can say it is 'not intrinsically impossible' for his Creator to lie, but Allah forbid should someone ever suggest it is possible for keller to be a liar! the list goes on...
