From his last work Armaghan e Hijaz

گناہ عشق و مستی عام کردند
دلیل پختگان را خام کردند
بہ آہنگ حجازی می سرایم
’’نخستین بادہ کاندر جام کردند‘‘

Gunaah-e-ishq-o-masti aam kardand
Daleel e pukhtagaan ra khaam kardand
Beh aahang e Hijazi mi siraayam
"Nakhasteen baadeh k'andar jaam kardand!"

They've made the sins of love and drunkenness common
They've made the proofs of the philosophers, hollow
In a Hijazi tune I am singing
"On the first day they poured this wine into a flask!"

Beautiful translation of Jawab-e-Shikwa. But are the meanings unchanged ?

Sadly, the translator, by adding words of his own in order to make the couplets rhyme in English has massacred the poem..

From the first one it seems that Iqbal was aware that many of his philosophies were unislamic.

Mufti Mujib Ahraf sahib (hafidhahullah) who is a direct student of Mufti-e-Azam-e-Hind (rahimahullah) says that there is 'sukoot' on Iqbal's eman.

Recently i came to know of the contents of his 'shikwa'. I wonder what happens when unsuspecting students of urdu read it. What if they admire/ relish it for its poetic eloquence? frightening.

Is there any metaphoric leeway that would render the poem unproblematic?

No. A friend told me this. He has studied at Darul-uloom Ahmed Raza, Ratnagiri and later at Ashrafiya, Mubarakpoor, i think he's done till takhassus. But he is in touch with Mufti Mujeeb Ashraf saab. I'll see if i can get any reference.

By the way he used to be a great fan of Iqbal. He has memeorized several of his poems including the complete Jawabe-Shikwa, and he can rattle them off anytime you ask.

He often quotes these lines:
" Aur ye ahle kalisa ka nizaam e taleem, ek sazish hai faqat deeno murrawat ke khilaf "

" us qaum ke muqaddar me mehkoomi wa mazlumi hai, wo qaum jo kar na saki apni khudi se insaaf "

" De kar ahle arab ko farangi takhayyulaat, islam ko yaman o Hijaz se nikaal do"

I can't help marvelling at how much vision Allah(azzawajal) had granted him. So many years ago he had said: "Farang ki rage jaan, panjae yehood me hai"!

being a visionary does not equate to being a muslim.

Allah(azzawajal) can grant HIS bounties to anyone. makes no difference. Reportedly, Hazrat Khalid bin waleed (radhiAllahuanhu) did not lose a single battle, even when he was opposing the muslims, doesn't mean he was muslim all along.

And please note that silence means 'real' silence, leaving the matter to Allah(azzawajal), not hiding what's in the heart which's called 'taqiyya', as i'm sure you know.

But the ulema are duty bound to state the ruling of what is on record, and so far as i can see, 'shikwa' contains statements which are kufr, at first sight. If there's any poetic metaphor that can make it otherwise, i am not aware. That's why i asked regarding it.

My friend doesn't have a personal bias against Iqbal, he still quotes those lines which have benefit in them.

Did you see Iqbal's views about the 'ahl e kalisa''s 'nizam e talim'?
