i happened to recall a story my late grandmother used to tell.
--- in the olden days, people were a close-knit community and particularly in villages, the whole village was one family. everybody knew about or cared for what went on in everybody else's house. one day, an old woman...as you know some old wives in those days were talkative, and had nothing better to do, so they visit many houses, picking stories, sharing some, adding some spice to picked up stories, etc. so the old woman went to a house and found the lady of the house cooking fowl. in those days, people ate fowl or meat on special occasions - and if something special was being cooked, everyone would be intrigued: 'hey what's going on?' so the lady of the house, was a little embarrassed with the unexpected visitor - nevertheless, invited her and they had lunch. as you know, in those days, it was dishonorable to not invite a guest to lunch - even if they came uninvited. after lunch, the lady quietly and hesitatingly told the old woman to not tell anyone that she had lunch in this house and that she had fowl for lunch. the old woman said: 'oh, yes. of course.' ----- and off she went. it was asr time already, and as you know, in villages, old men and others would sit outside the masjid, chatting until maghrib. so the old lady was passing the masjid and addressing some old men said loudly: "my good sir, umm zayd stole a fowl and cooked it. she ate it, and then she made me eat it too. then she says, 'don't tell this to anyone.' pray, why would i tell it to anyone, even if she has stolen a fowl and cooked it?"
